It was meant to be just another late-night ride home. Three bright young students, full of dreams of healing others, tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident early this morning in Kozhikode, Kerala. Â
The Fatal Incident Â
Â
Between 1:40 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on March 19, an electric scooter carrying three first-year MBBS students from Malabar Medical College crashed into an electric pole at Kuruvangad, near Koyilandy. Â
The impact was severe, causing the vehicle to overturn and fall into a roadside drain. All three students either died on the spot or succumbed to their injuries shortly after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Â
Â
The Victims Â
Â
The victims have been identified as: Â
•Nandakishore (Nanda Kishore), 22, from Karunagappally, Kollam district Â
•Abhiyan Rahman (Abiyan), 19, from Kayamkulam Â
•Abhinav Suresh, 19–20, from Alanellur, Palakkad district Â
Â
A Painful Reminder Â
Reading about this incident is deeply heartbreaking. Kerala has made remarkable progress in healthcare and education, yet road safety continues to be a serious concern. Â
Electric scooters are convenient and eco-friendly. However, when overloaded or driven at high speeds on poorly lit roads with open drains and unmarked obstacles, they can become extremely dangerous. Â
This accident serves as a painful reminder that: Â
•Helmets save lives wearing them is non-negotiable. Â
•Overloading a two-wheeler is risky and should never be attempted. Â
•Late night travel requires extra caution, especially on unfamiliar or poorly maintained roads. Â
•Young lives are irreplaceable, especially those dedicated to saving others. Â
Â
Condolences to the Families Â
To the grieving families in Karunagappally, Kayamkulam, and Alanellur: words cannot fully express the pain of such a loss. Your sons were on the path to fulfilling their dreams and making their communities proud. Â
May you find strength during this incredibly difficult time. Their lives, though tragically short, will continue to inspire many. Â
A Call for Safer Roads Â
Â
To every student and young rider: please prioritize safety. Wear a helmet. Avoid overloading vehicles. Follow traffic rules. One moment of negligence can undo years of hard work and dreams. Â
This tragedy should not fade away as just another headline. It must spark meaningful conversations within colleges, among families, and with authorities about improving road safety for students. Â
