NMC caught sleeping!! A take on Delayed Stipends

NMC caught sleeping!! A take on Delayed Stipends

Yet again, cry of help is raised by yet another intern, a medical graduate for prolonged delays in receiving their stipends, often stretching up to even six months after completion of their internships.

Students from Government Medical College (GMC), Churu, Rajasthan, belonging to the 2020 batch, have sought help from social media influencers that despite completing their internship in March, they are yet to receive their dues even by mid-April.

Repeated visits to authorities have reportedly yielded nothing more than “excuses,” even with formal complaints to the National Medical Commission, aka the prestigious NMC, also failing to prompt action.

A similar situation has been reported at RCSM Government Medical College in Kolhapur, where interns claim consistent delays in stipend disbursement, leading to financial strain during a crucial phase of their careers. This period coincides with preparation for the most infamous, depressingly competitive NEET PG exam, adding to extra stress and mental fatigue to their lives.

Doctors Vs Beggers

Internship stipends, often modest are nonetheless a vital source of support for young doctors who work long, exhausting hours in hospitals.

“This is not a scholarship it’s earned through relentless duty, blood and sweat, often in high pressure and resource limited settings,” one intern said.

Most of the private medical colleges are notoriously infamous for their delay in the stipend, sky-high fees despite standards decided by the government,

regulatory guidelines. Since the enforcement mechanisms remain weak,  institutions have courage to bypass norms without consequence.

NMC VS IMC

The controversy also casts a shadow on the functioning of the National Medical Commission, which replaced the Medical Council of India with promises of transparency, uniformity, and reform. Or let's say the 'Drama' of creating NMC was under the slogan

"One nation, one exam"

But ever since it's establishment, NMC have done nothing but distressing and harrassing the medical students and the medical fraternity. Complaints are often thrown out of the window, and the all timer issues like dying doctors, including increasing incidents of violence against healthcare workers, deteriorating mental health of the backbone of Medical system are often paid least attention or say put in the blind spot. With little institutional support, many are beginning to question their future within the country’s healthcare system.

Where do India take the doctors?

As frustrations mount, a pressing question remains unanswered: who advocates for the doctors, who form the beating heart of India’s healthcare delivery? Who takes stand for Medical graduate, the future of healthcare.

Hence, the idea of seeking opportunities abroad is no longer just an aspiration but a necessity for dignity and stability.
