Assam’s Medical Education Revolution: One Medical College in Every District by 2030

Assam’s Medical Education Revolution: One Medical College in Every District by 2030

The Chief Minister announced:“Our aim is to build medical colleges in each district, and I believe by 2030 this vision will become a reality.”

On March 15, 2026 during the inauguration of Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a bold and transformative vision for the state’s future in medical education.

The target is ambitious yet promising: 5,000 MBBS seats across Assam by 2030, along with a government medical college in each of the state’s 35 districts.

Where Assam Stands Today (March 2026)

Number of medical colleges: 15

Total MBBS seats: Approximately 2,000

Ongoing expansion: 10 new medical colleges under construction

Estimated investment: Around ₹6,000 crore

Once these upcoming colleges become operational, the total number of MBBS seats is expected to rise significantly, potentially reaching the 5,000 mark.

Why This Announcement Matters

For years, aspiring medical students from Assam have faced several challenges:

Intense competition for a limited number of government seats

High fees in private medical colleges outside the state

The need to relocate to other states or even abroad for education

This new initiative has the potential to change that reality.

More seats mean better chances of securing a government MBBS seat within the state.Reduced financial burden and less stress related to sending children far from home.

Each new medical college will include an attached hospital, improving access to quality healthcare in underserved districts.

Assam is steadily positioning itself as a major hub for medical education in the Northeast.

The Road Ahead

The vision goes beyond increasing seat numbers. The broader goal is to reduce brain drain and build a strong, self-reliant healthcare system within the state.

While establishing a medical college in every district by 2030 is the long-term objective, the immediate focus remains on completing the 10 ongoing projects. These alone could bring a substantial boost to the state’s medical education capacity.

However, success will depend on several key factors:

Availability of qualified and experienced faculty

Development of modern infrastructure

Timely approvals from the National Medical Commission (NMC)

If the current pace of development continues, Assam appears well on track to achieve its goal.
