Incident at Ummed Hospital, Jodhpur
A controversy emerged at Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur after resident doctors and nursing staff were found celebrating Holi inside the labour room. Following the incident, an inquiry committee was constituted to investigate the matter. The committee submitted its report to the hospital administration on Tuesday.
Findings of the Inquiry Committee
According to the report, resident doctors and nursing officers had played Holi in the labour room area. The celebration reportedly started with resident doctors from the Gynecology department.
During the investigation, it was revealed that some first year resident doctors unknowingly reached the labour room while playing Holi and included the staff present there in the celebration. They later admitted that they were not aware that celebrating Holi in a sensitive area such as the labour room was inappropriate.
The inquiry report was prepared by Dr. Neelam Meena, Dr. Sandeep Chaudhary and Nursing Superintendent Dr. Lakshmani Rawal and was submitted to the hospital administration.
Disciplinary Action Taken
Following the inquiry, action has been taken against the involved staff members.
Fourteen resident doctors have been assigned an additional 15 days of rotation duty along with their regular duties in the labour room.
In addition, four nursing officers have been removed from labour room duties and reassigned to other departments. Their one month leave has also been cancelled as part of the disciplinary action.
Why Celebrating Holi in a Labour Room is Inappropriate
Labour rooms are highly sensitive clinical areas where strict hygiene and infection control practices must be maintained. Celebrations such as playing Holi involve colors, water, and crowding, which can compromise sterility and increase the risk of infection for mothers and newborns. The labour room environment must remain calm, clean, and professional because deliveries are unpredictable emergencies that require constant readiness. Any activity unrelated to patient care can disrupt clinical work and potentially affect patient safety.
Code of Conduct for Resident Doctors
Resident doctors are expected to maintain professional behavior at all times within hospital premises. Hospitals are places of patient care where discipline, hygiene, and ethical conduct are essential. Residents must follow infection control protocols, respect sensitive clinical areas such as labour rooms, operation theatres, and intensive care units, and ensure that their actions do not compromise patient safety or hospital decorum. Professional conduct also includes maintaining dignity, prioritizing patient care over personal activities, and adhering to institutional rules and medical ethics while on duty.
